Cleaning and maintaining your stove is so easy even a child can do it. But as the adult, you’re stuck with the job. If you smell gas or you don’t know what you’re doing call your gas company before proceeding.
1) Cleaning Burners: When your burners do not light this signals dirty portholes. Aren’t you ashamed? This one’s easy (don’t you believe it). Lift the range top snapping it into the open position and pull out the burner assembly. The assembly is round with holes and runs from the control knobs on the range’s front panel. Can’t find the control knobs or the front panel? Really? Call the gas company immediately. Poke a stiff thin piece of wire into the holes. Easy, Pal. You don’t want to widen the holes, just clean them. Now wash the burner heads with soap and water. Replace the burner heads being careful to line up the portholes with the pipe running to the pilot.
2) Adjusting Your Manual Pilots: A properly adjusted high flame burns clean, blue and constant. When the burner doesn’t receive the correct amount of air the flame will burn blue-yellow and white leaving soot on your pots and pans. While the stovetop is locked in the open position look behind the control knobs. You will see a filter valve with an adjustment screw. Uh huh, yours does not have a filter valve or an adjustment screw? Really? Call the gas company immediately. Turn the adjustment screw (in the biz, us pros call this screw a chingadera) with a screwdriver until the flame turns a nice constant blue. Well, okay – you can allow a just a bit of yellow.
3)Adjusting Your Automatic Pilots: An automatic pilot uses an electronic starter. If you hear a short series of clicks after turning the knob on and just before the burner flames, you are on automatic. Still can’t locate the knobs? Don’t bother the gas company. See this as one of life’s great adventures and just forge ahead into the unknown. If there is no click, click, click, or the burner does not flame when you twist the control knob, you have a dirty electrode. The electrodes are halfway between each pilot on the left and right-hand side inside the top of your stove. Check for bad wires from the igniter to the module and from the module to the control switch. Now use your voltmeter and test the module by attaching the voltmeter to the marked L and N ends of the module. If you don’t have power, your module is shot. This is an excellent time to toss back a brewski while you wait on line to order a new module from your appliance repair station.
